Jitney
Gough Street Playhouse
1620 Gough St San Francisco
Multi Ethnic Theater performs Jitney, their fourth of 10 plays by Pulitzer-winning playwright August Wilson that they intend to stage over the next six years. Jitney is the 1970s installment of Wilson's renowned cycle of 10 plays depicting African-American life in the 20th century. It tells the stories of a ragtag group of men working in a Pittsburgh jitney cab company where tensions run high as the city threatens to shut it down. The station owner Becker has other things to worry about, as his son Booster is about to be released from prison after 20 years. Other characters include the motor-mouthed Turnbo who meddles in the lives of his fellow drivers; Youngblood, a Vietnam War veteran and his girlfriend Rena; and Shealy, a numbers-taker who uses the station as his base.
