With its comic, lively score and witty book, THE BOY FRIEND manages to create endearing (if silly) characters while still letting audiences in on the joke. The show is set in the 1920s on the French Riviera and follows the antics of several young women in the pursuit of love, marriage, and a rollicking good time. The story centers on Polly, a wealthy, boyfriend-less girl who falls for charming errand-boy Tony. With its over-the-top lyrics and exaggerated dialogue, THE BOY FRIEND is an affectionate send-up of the heyday of vaudeville-style musicals of the early Twentieth Century familiar to today's audiences mostly through the work of the Gershwins and Jerome Kern.
